REAL BOOKS MEET LEARNING OUTCOMES…WHAT IS IT ALL ABOUT?
One thing I didn’t mention in the above video that I get asked a lot is “What if my library doesn’t have the books you’ve listed?” The answer to that question is: we picked as many books as we could find for each outcome so that most libraries in BC will have at least one of the books listed. We have also listed ‘key words’ that you can use to plug into your online library search to find other books in the same category. If you are still unable to find a suitable book, you may want to request an inter-library loan from your librarian. Most libraries will allow a small amount of free inter-library loans per year.
I’ve home schooled my own kids from the beginning. If you’re picturing anything you’ve seen on TV, we’re not quite like that-though thousands of strangers ask me about it every time I leave the house with everyone! It’s extremely busy around our house. It’s so hard to get to everything I want to. Home schooling around here wasn’t quite matching up to what I hoped it would…so I dreamed this up from my own need for it.
What I want:
*to read really great books with my kids-living books, books written by real people who are passionate about their subject-for me, the best are when a person writes down their own story-real, living history. I want my kids to LOVE learning and reading
*to make use of the amazing, often free resources all around us-the Public Library, the internet, great videos, great places to visit
*to be organized enough to know that I taught each child most of what I intended to and was accountable to teach him or her
*material that’s specifically developed for Canadians
What I don’t want:
*to be frustrated with my kids because there isn’t enough of me to go around and I’m continually having to plan their schoolwork-they’ll only be little for such a short time and I really do want to enjoy them and not wish their childhood away
*to spend a small fortune on curriculum that sits on my shelf because I need to have a couple of hours to read through it and organize it and figure out how to make it age-appropriate to a wide range of kids
*to never get to science because it’s just too messy and I don’t really know what I’m supposed to be teaching so I leave it until the last week of the year
*to be overwhelmed with the government lingo of learning outcomes
Out of all of this, Living Books for Life was born!
It’s what I wish I had at the beginning and what I need this year and next year…
Along with a couple of teachers and experienced home schooling Moms, we’re reading a ton of library books, trying to find the best ones that match up with the outcomes and compiling a list of books. We list the books under the outcome and then at the end, do a write-up on each book, noting which outcomes it meets, whether or not you can use it for another subject as well, listing information like the ISBN number and a brief summary about the book. We have tried to include fictional books with non-fiction and include a range of reading levels. We’ve begun with Health & Career, Social Studies & Science for British Columbia. The booklist just didn’t seem to be quite enough though…
So we created a fun activity book as well! We included lots of fun charts, some practical ways to learn the concepts, some questions and answers and a place for you to record what you’ve learned. We wanted it to be a mix of methods so the student can show what they’ve learned. We tried it out on my kids, who peeked over my shoulder and begged to just be allowed to try them and offered suggestions. The result in the end will be a keepsake of the school year. The bonus is that our teacher that we’re accountable to is thrilled because it’s all done and clearly laid out.
The end result is something that I, in the midst of my home schooling journey, really need and love. May it be a blessing to your family. May it take out frustration and put the joy back in learning. No text books, no expensive curriculum, just good books and fun activities…and more time for you to spend enjoying your homeschool experience!
